Piano Concerts at Sheffield City Hall

Friday, 24 January 2025

As part of the Sheffield International Concert Season 2024/25, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra is set to captivate audiences at Sheffield City Hall on Friday, 24 January 2025. This eagerly awaited performance, under the baton of Chief Conductor John Storgårds, promises a night of classical music featuring two monumental works: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor” and Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5.

The evening will also highlight the talent of pianist Paul Lewis, whose mastery of Beethoven’s repertoire has earned international praise. His interpretation of the Emperor Concerto is expected to showcase both the grandeur of Beethoven’s composition and the poetic tone of Sheffield City Hall’s Steinway piano.

This concert is not just a celebration of timeless music but also a testament to the sound of Sheffield City Hall’s Steinway piano. Renowned pianist Peter Hill, who recently performed on the instrument, describes it as “the best piano in the country,” lauded for its graceful tone and versatility. Hill’s pre-concert performance on 7 December highlighted the piano’s unique qualities, pairing Bach’s lyrical Prelude and Fugue in C with Messiaen’s vividly colourful L'Alouette lulu.

Attendees of the BBC Philharmonic concert will hear this amazing instrument in all its splendour during Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, a piece designed to showcase a piano's full dynamic range and emotional depth.

The program opens with Beethoven’s majestic concerto, where Lewis’ and the Steinway are sure to shine. Following the interval, Storgårds will lead the BBC Philharmonic through Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
